The Varone Waterfall
"At the bottom of the deep, narrow abyss of bulging bare rock, slippery like the huge bellies of fish, the flood of water crashed down with a deafening roar. Behind, above and all around could be heard threatening and warning calls, trumpets and the rough voices of men": the same Thomas Mann was so impressed that he recorded these ideas in one of his most famous works, "The Magic Mountain" (1924).
The Varone region has been well known since the second half of the nineteenth century, because of one of the most charming characteristics of the Trentino region of Lake Garda: the waterfall on the Magone stream, which flows out from Lake Tenno, and encounters a fall of almost one hundred metres. From that point of the waterfall the stream takes the name of Varone.
Riva del Garda
Varone is however a small outlying district of the much better known settlement of Riva del Garda, which, since prehistoric times was a landing place for various communities, then became, from the second half of the nineteenth century onwards, a tourist destination for the mid-European elite. The Trentino region of Garda has in fact become a special destination thanks to its Mediterranean climate, to its typically Prealpine morphology, and to its particularly rich and diversified floral range: "a Mediterranean fjord within a Prealpine region".
Sport
The Trentino region of Lake Garda is a great spot for engaging in a large number of sports, as its distinctive morphology is adapted to varying needs.
The waters of Lake Garda and its famous wind attract high-level competitions in the areas of windsurfing and sailing; and lovers of canoeing, scuba diving and fishing can also enjoy themselves amongst the waves and amongst the secrets of the underwater world. In the mountains, which form a natural frame for this Mediterranean spot, the sports of free climbing and rock climbing have become popular.
Mountain biking
In recent years a passion for mountain biking has become widespread, a sport which unites the pleasure of healthy movement in the open air with the desire to put oneself to the test on trails of varying difficulty, in unparalleled natural scenery. Recently, improvised tracks have been prepared and dedicated to lovers of mountain biking, and demonstrations and fairs in this field have been organized to attract fans from all over the world: there is no better or more enjoyable way to get to know this thoroughly enchanting region, which will astonish you with both its "Mediterranean" and "Alpine" scenery.
Culture
The "Sommo Lago" area holds countless historical testimonies, from the first Mesolithic hunters, who left traces of their first passing, to the architecture and culture that inspired, and still inspire, the construction of buildings in the style of Lombardy and the Veneto. Without listing all of the historic attractions of our region and of the upper Garda community, we invite you to learn about our culture, starting with the castles...
For any historical information, we would be truly delighted to assist you and to advise you about the most interesting cultural destinations in our region and in the neighbouring areas.
